Q: Tornado Asynchronous solution for features with different durations I have a feature in my app that shows photos for an event. It’s a photo stream for a person who attends the event. Each photo has a release date. What the user sees is the photos for the last few days and maybe even months. If the event is popular, the user might see photos for the last 2 weeks. It’s not always, though. I’ve been investigating tornado and recently implemented the photo stream using Tornado. I have some idea of how to implement that using Tornado. The problem I’m running into is that the photos don’t need to be downloaded until the photo stream is requested. This means that I need an asynchronous solution. I’m currently thinking of having two functions: a user-request-photo-stream function and a user-view-photo-stream function. The problem is, I don’t know how to make the second function wait for the first. Basically what I want to know is: How can I ensure that the user-view-photo-stream function is executed first, and only after that function is executed, that the request-photo-stream function can execute. A: The main issue you run into with Tornado is that there’s no simple way to await execution of code. Tornado will only allow asynchronous execution of code if you use callbacks or if you use a thread pool. The callbacks and thread pool are OK if you have a small amount of code, but they quickly run out of memory, and it’s hard to get a decent number of threads. This means that if the image loading code (or any other blocking code) is long, it’s pretty unlikely that you can get any speed up with the thread pool. Until Tornado 2.0, the only way around that was to use one of the libraries that support non-blocking code. A popular one is node.js.
