On paper, there aren’t a ton of puzzle elements, but Sugar Cube’s delivery is so intuitive that you won’t even know you’re testing your wits, and most of your enjoyment comes from how clever the levels are. “Touch one bit of the wall wrong, and you’re dead,” producer and level designer Soren Klick told us. “Controls are responsive, but this is a platformer: you don’t reach as far as it looks like you can, so you don’t need to necessarily be able to see the distance into the levels. You need to move good enough to get where you want to go.” Using the metaphor again, Sugar Cube’s unique gameplay boils down to two central components—the block mechanic, and the status mechanic. With the block mechanic, Sugar Cube’s main mechanic, you use the environment to your advantage, responding to paths that naturally branch off or dive underground to bring you to your destination. While the more traditional platformers include jump and wall-jump mechanics, these operate purely by pushing blocks to rise through. In Sugar Cube, these are secondary means of accomplishment.
