This has been a fortified position for defence since the 14th century, and a turret on the summit was built by King David I in 1153 in time for the baptism of his son and successor Henry the Young King. A keep of stone walls and a large, steep stairway was built around 1480, with another keep added later. The Greenyards of the Castle was used as a prison for prisoners of King James IV from 1493 to 1497. It was also used as an army headquarters. When the castle was abandoned as a residence in 1746, the keep and towers were demolished. An inn, hostel and brothel were established on the site. The keep is believed to have been built to a similar design to that of the Round Tower in Ireland, most likely by architect John Smith. The building’s tower is 19 metres high and contains the 82 cm gun original built in 1749, a replica of the white ball gun that was first used in 1744 during the Jacobite rising of 1745. The west annex is believed to have been designed by Smith and was completed in 1770. It now houses a restaurant, the West Bow Bar. For the most part, the two separate buildings are disassociated from each other. Each have separate entranceways and stairways. The two towers are joined only in the base. The property is owned by the Crown and leased by the Clan MacNeil.
