RECORD calculates the total number of „recombination events”. It is a part of the Genetic Analysis Program (GAP) and of the Optimised Reference System (ORESYS) program package. GAP is a computer-based package developed for statistical analysis of genetic linkage data. ORESYS is a parallel computational tool designed for the analysis of gene orders. It is a component of the GAP package. The algorithm works in two stages. The first stage simulates gene orders in a population; the second stage counts the recombination events between the simulated orders. In the first stage, a random order is generated. Next, each gene that is within the same block as the previous gene is moved to the next block. If the gene in the new block is pre-occupied by another gene, then a new random order is generated until all genes are assigned to blocks. This continues until all genes are within blocks. Finally, all unordered genes are placed in the blocks in the final order. This simulated order is then stored and used as the target order for the second stage, the recombination analysis. The method works very efficiently and is capable of resolving around 100,000 loci in a ten second run on a IBM RS6000 computer with 128 megabytes of RAM.
