Here we show that CLU has a dynamic pattern of expression at the scale of this developmental period. CLU is synthesized in the center and the lip, but its expression is preferentially localized in the lip. This is followed by a progressive decline of CLU during the late stages of gestation and after birth. CLU transcript is not abundant in prenatal cerebellar development, whereas its expression becomes abundant in the cerebellum in infancy. There is a decrease in CLU transcript and protein expression levels in the cortex of Alzheimer’s disease brains. On the basis of these observations, we propose the hypothesis that the premature disappearance of CLU may be responsible for the development of cortical atrophy in Alzheimer’s disease.
