If you live in Long Beach and you like texting, you should reconsider your habit.
Yes, texting is OK in many situations — especially at the movie theater, during a baseball game or while driving. But if you’re a pedestrian, a cyclist or on a bus, you should not be sending or receiving text messages while crossing an intersection or, far worse, when you’re walking your dog.
Texting is a major distraction for anyone operating a vehicle, and it’s especially hazardous to people in wheelchairs, strollers and other walkers. In fact, most of us would like to forget the last time we suffered a collision with a texting pedestrian.
Besides being unsafe, texting is also rude. It’s a substitute for eye contact, a smile, a nod and other common signals that are part of how people express themselves and interact with others. As the saying goes, actions speak louder than words.
Long Beach is trying to reduce the texting problem. The city will introduce nine more pedestrian-safety signs on busy streets in the coming weeks. And parents are being strongly advised to educate their children to cross only at designated crossings, to pick up their smartphones only after crossing the street and to put them in their pockets when crossing the street.
But the city’s efforts are a drop in the ocean. In most places, driving while texting is still legal. All too often, police officers and crash investigators have found that texting pedestrians failed to look both ways before they crossed and failed to use what little time they had to look around for approaching vehicles.
In the past, I’ve been commuting by bicycle on Pacific Coast Highway, when cyclists are nearly invisible to drivers. But suddenly, drivers began treating them with less respect than they had been previously, and things got much worse.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were more than 200,000 bicycle-pedestrian accidents nationwide in 2010, and about 7,000 of those involved a texting pedestrian.
Every one of these accidents should be a wakeup call, yet they continue to happen. We need to start treating pedestrians as we did before cellphones became popular: as people who are of equal importance as drivers.

TORONTO – Andrew Miller pitched the longest save inning of his career, lowering his major league-leading total to 11, as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-0 on Sunday. Miller (11-1) matched his career high with 11 outs in the seventh inning of a cold and windy game that saw the fans get little protection from the weather. The right-hander went to his high school baseball coach in Canada, Rick Reece, to work on the delivery after Cleveland closer Aroldis Chapman did a number on him. Miller gave the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead with a one-out single in the third, when Aaron Sanchez reached third on a passed ball. Baltimore second baseman Jonathan Schoop took the easy infield throw. Right fielder Devon Travis followed with a walk to load the bases, and Sanchez stole second to give the Blue Jays the lead. Sanchez was then intentionally walked to load the bases again. Facing left-hander Darren O’Day, Miller threw only 68 pitches. Nate Jones ended the inning with a popout and a double play, and R.A. Dickey went two innings to win his sixth straight game. After the game, the Blue Jays said they were not looking into any legal action against the Orioles for the incident involving a fan who threw a ball onto the field. The fan, Alberto Seda of Jamaica, was ejected. The Blue Jays have won 13 in a row against Baltimore. “It wasn’t intentional,’’ Miller said of the fan’s actions. “It was a heat of the moment, and it was the right thing to do.
