A prototype of a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) electron transport module (ETM) in the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been successfully fabricated by the conventional evaporation/sputtering and lift-off processes. The epitaxial layer of n-type GaN on a sapphire substrate was grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) in the 10-inch two-axis rotating reactor. After growing the GaN wafer, the ohmic contacts were formed by electron beam evaporation and lift-off processes in the MBE chamber. The sample was then prepared for TEM observation. Two independent p-type ZnO films were prepared by solution-processed methods and annealed by furnace at temperatures of 450 °C and 850 °C. All films on the backside of a sapphire substrate and the n-GaN/sapphire/n-GaN/sapphire stack were prepared by MBE on a 10-inch two-axis rotating reactor. We demonstrated the device characteristics and electron transport using the gate-controlled n-ZnO-p-ZnO FET transistor structure. We expect that this CMOS ETM would be useful in the nanobioelectronics, nanoelectronics, and optoelectronics applications.Galvani Discovered Transmembrane Potassium Channels. Transmembrane cation channels such as K+, Na+, and Ca2+ ion channels are highly important in signal transduction. In 18th century Italy, Luigi Galvani and his colleagues first demonstrated that the exposed, severed head of a dead frog electrified by contact with a Leyden jar while the frog’s leg remained unimpressed. Galvani attributed this to the influence of the nervous system in the severed head, and he claimed that his observations demonstrated the concept of an electrical nerve pulse. To Galvani’s surprise, in 1822, Charles Bell confirmed that Galvani’s experiments demonstrated that an external electrical stimulus caused muscles to contract when the severed frog’s leg was connected electrically to a living frog. The discovery of electrical signals and stimuli was of course purely the work of Galvani, and a great many confirmations of Galvani’s findings.
