An increased count of leukocytes is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in patients with heart failure (HF). Neutrophils play a role in the pathogenesis and progression of HF, and determine the clinical outcome in patients with HF. We prospectively examined leukocyte cell count, particularly the leukocyte subtype, neutrophils, and their prognostic implications in patients with chronic HF (CHF). The participants were 116 consecutive patients (54+/-14 years of age) with stable CHF on digoxin and enalapril therapy; 57 patients (50%) were admitted to the hospital within one year prior to study inclusion and 59 (50%) were follow-up patients; 65 patients (57%) died during follow-up. The main study endpoints were all-cause mortality and combined endpoints consisting of cardiovascular (CV) death or CV events. The leukocyte cell count was similar between surviving (n = 65) and deceased (n = 51) patients. The median survival time was 3.5 months in all patients, and was significantly associated with the white cell count (P=.001), and neutrophil counts (P =. 008). Univariate analysis showed that high white cell count (median survival 2.1 vs. 4.4 months, PDNA vaccination against rabies virus induces potent cellular and humoral immune responses
