In this solution, the elastomeric member is mounted on the shaft so that it is radially between the ID of the shaft and the inner race of a bearing. The elastomeric member has a wide range of stiffness, which can be changed during operation of the turbomachine. The stiffness of the elastomeric member, however, typically increases with increasing velocity. This means that the damping force of the elastomeric member increases with increasing velocity. This makes the damper assembly more effective in reducing vibration at higher engine speeds. One disadvantage of such a damper assembly is that the elastomeric member is located at the ID of the shaft. Since the shaft rotates, the elastomeric member is located in the hot gas path. Because of this, the elastomeric member must have a hardness that allows it to withstand the heat that is imparted thereto. Typically, the hardness of the elastomeric member is 60 Shore A. The hardness must be increased so that the elastomeric member is able to withstand the heat in the hot gas path. Increasing the hardness, however, decreases the ability of the elastomeric member to deform, and thus, increase its damping properties.
