Set in the early 70’s in Johannesburg South Africa, “Riding the Razor’s Edge” is a personal narrative short story about the year 1974 that was able to capture the times we live in as well as the culture we were used to. The story revolves around a 15 year old boy who just has to come to terms with his own life and what he has to do to survive in South Africa in 1974. We follow the boy as he begins to understand and fight for his right to survive, both physically and mentally, as he feels is his duty and he’s expected to do so. To make this game, I followed two different types of principles when making a game and had to pull them both in when it came to this. One was the visuals of the game, with it’s simple, but effective design. The other was, as a person who doesn’t have very much money. I was able to create something simple, but full of potential on a budget of R480 from the R420 I made back at the beginning of 2014. How it Started I had been working as a freelance developer for a year or so when I randomly received the idea to create a game and had no idea at the time. It just kind of came up in my mind and popped up, so I just went ahead and started working on it. I knew I wasn’t the best programmer, but I knew how to do HTML, CSS, and Javascript. The thing with making a game is that you don’t know if you’re going to have a hit or a miss. By me learning these HTML, CSS, and Javascript, I was able to make a simple prototype version of what was to come. I made a simple spinning “game” where you could either “win” (by hitting the “win” button) or “lose” (by hitting the “lose” button). I attached a video of the prototype to my website www.nitbao.com. This action film with over 2000 cuts ( I actually counted and I think it’s a bit less than 2x the number of cuts) was shot in 35mm, so I am amazed at the standard of the soundtrack. The film is extremely fast and loud. You do not get a real impression of what is going on unless you get every cut. I have even seen actors stop talking while shooting. This leads me to believe that the film was made on a military budget (at least the part of it I’ve seen). I can safely say it’s the loudest film I’ve heard. The dialogues are repeated – that is, the actors talk so fast you have to keep watching them to keep up. 1. Was always stuck in a situation where two of the four guards would rush me while i’m moving left and right. Usually, the two that would rush me from behind, but occasionally, the ones rushing from the sides. 2. I would blast my fist into the screen to push the guards back. I would also shoot the laser at the guards to blast them and avoid getting captured. But they would get close enough to me so that it would be really hard to blast them into the ground. Then, a few times, the guards would get into a position where they were close enough that the laser would not hurt them, but a blast into their face would still hurt them. This was the way to guarantee that they would just pass by me and I would be captured. 3. Then, i would get into a situation where a guard with a shotgun would be rushing me from behind. Then I would blast him from the side with the laser and the two guards that rushed me from the sides would get away. Then, a few times, i would get into a situation where all of the guards would rush me at the same time, and i’d get the shotgun with me, so i would just shoot the one that rushes me and the other three would get away. 4. Then i would just run out of the area and the „finish” music would play as i got captured. 5. I’d be like, „Well, that was fun. Now, I don’t have to play this game anymore. Good job, Ketchworks!” Gameplay (cont.) 1. It’s pretty obvious how „Gazmatera 2” plays. 2. There are seven guards that you have to beat in order to get „The Recording.” 3. There are four waves of „The Recording” that you have to beat in order to beat this game. 4. Each wave is a 10 minute long fight with each of the four different guards. 5. Each wave is just the one of the four guards. 6. Each wave is the same as the one before except for the guard that’s there. For example, Wave 1 is the same as Wave 2, except for the second guy. Wave 3 is the same as Wave 4, except for the second guy. etc. 6. Each wave takes about 5 minutes to beat.
