    Hepcidin in perioperative vascular complications. CVD represents the most important cause of mortality and morbidity in the western world. An effective risk stratification of high-risk patients requiring interventional cardiology procedures carries the potential to reduce adverse outcomes. Hepcidin is a key anti-microbial peptide produced by human liver. In this work, we evaluated plasma concentrations of hepcidin in 40 subjects undergoing elective coronary interventional procedures (CIVP), 39 patients with NSTEMI/STEMI, and 19 healthy individuals. Results showed that plasma hepcidin concentrations are increased in the settings of acute myocardial ischemia; furthermore, plasma hepcidin concentrations were significantly higher in patients who developed perioperative vascular complications. An important secondary finding was that plasma hepcidin concentrations were higher in interventional cardiology patients compared to patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions. Along with higher vascular complications and GRACE predicted risk scores, plasma hepcidin concentrations may provide a potential treatment algorithm to identify high-risk patients requiring C
